Call for Papers / Submissions

Bridging the Gulf: Connecting the Ethnohistories of the Americas

This year’s conference theme builds on the history of New Orleans as a nexus between North America, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. Just as New Orleans has combined these worlds into a cross-cultural city, this year’s meeting focuses on the ethnohistorical ties throughout the Americas and seeks to bring these seemingly distinct scholarly worlds together in collaborative fashion. We encourage panel and paper proposals that combine work being done in more than one geographical area and/or that seek to draw comparisons between ethnohistorical research and methodology developed in diverse American settings, although any panel or paper on an ethnohistorical topic will be considered.

Complete panel proposals with presenters, chair, and discussants are preferred, but individual paper proposals are also accepted. The firm deadline for applications is May 15, 2009. Please note the earlier than usual date of the conference as well as the earlier than usual deadline for the submission of proposals and abstracts. Applicants will be notified of the status of their proposals by June 15, 2009

It is not necessary to register for the conference in order to have a paper or panel accepted. Once papers and panels are accepted, however, participants MUST register as an ASE member by August 1, 2009. Click here for membership information.

Special Editor's Session

The Editors and Editorial Board of Ethnohistory invite proposals for an invited Editors' Session to be held at the 2009 meeting in New Orleans. We are looking for a proposal that closely mirrors the theme of the conference ''Bridging the Gulf,'' that is, which involves representatives from several regions and disciplinary orientations exploring a common theme. The successful proposal will be published as a special issue of the journal. Completed papers will be due within six months of the meeting. The session should consist of 6-8 papers. In order to for a session to be considered for the Editor's Session, please submit a session proposal, including a session abstract and abstracts of individual papers by the May 15th deadline through the online submission process. Be sure to check the box ''For consideration of the Editor's Session.'' Submissions not accepted for the Editors' Session will be considered for inclusion in the regular program without prejudice.
