ANNUAL MEETING 2007 (7th-10th November)

Call for Papers / Submissions

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Tulsa in partnership with the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is pleased to host the 2007 Meeting of the American Society for Ethnohistory. The date November 16, 1907, marks the centennial of the admission of the state of Oklahoma to the Union. The thirty-eight federally recognized American Indian tribes in Oklahoma today are sovereign, self-governing nations whose presence in the state is evidence of the ability of tribal/cultural identity to transcend removal from homelands and the vagaries of federal assimilation policy.

We particularly invite proposals that address the theme of the persistence of cultural identity over time through creative adaptation. We also welcome proposals that address issues of emerging nationalism in indigenous societies in all parts of the world. Other themes will, of course, be welcome.

Individuals may submit single-paper proposals, but complete panel submissions are preferred. The deadline for applications is June 15, 2007. Applicants will be notified of the status of their proposals by September 1, 2006. We strongly encourage electronic submissions. All of the necessary forms will be available on the American Society for Ethnohistory’s website: http://www.ethnohistory.org/.
