2006 ANNUAL MEETING

Commemorating Encounters: Reenactments and Reinterpretations
November 1-5, 2006

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary, in partnership with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the Jamestown - Yorktown Foundation is pleased to host the 2006 Meeting of the American Society for Ethnohistory. The theme of this year’s conference, in anticipation of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, gives special emphasis to the ways in which natives and newcomers engaged with one another through culturally mediated performance, and to the processes by which ethnohistorians interpret these encounters. The upcoming quadricentennial events in the restored colonial capital of Virginia, and in nearby Jamestown and Yorktown also invite consideration of the way in which encounters have been reenacted, and what these reenactments mean.
